The New Year Eve celebrations drew to an end, it was 01:00 on 1 January 2022 and, with a cup of tea in hand, I pressed the button to formally launch this website and announce my Kungsleden 'challenge for charity' trek that will take place during the months of August to September of this year.

Although I do a lot of walking I definitely would not classify myself as fit and I have quite a few kilos of weight to lose. To have any real chance of walking the 480km / 300 miles in the 4 week window that I have allocated, I need to prepare and train appropriately over the seven and a half months leading up to the event. So the beginning of January also sees the launch my fitness campaign, starting with some countryside walks.

Walk #1: Uffington White Horse, Uffington Castle and Weyland's Smithy, Oxfordshire, England

Date: 2 January 2022

Grade: Easy

Distance: 7.5 miles /12km

The walk from Uffington White Horse to Weyland Smithy is an easy walk between two ancient landmarks, 25 minutes from where I live.

Walk #2: Savernake Forest, Wiltshire, England

Date: 3 January 2022

Grade: Easy

Distance: 4.8 miles / 7.7km

Just 30 minutes from where I live, Savernake Forest is one of my favourite destinations for an evening or weekend stroll. No matter what time of day, or what season you arrive, the forest never fails to entertain. If you are very quiet as you wander through the trees, you may be fortunate to see a deer or a wild board.

Walk #4: Edale to Kinder Scout circular route (via Grindsbrook Clough)

Thank you, Graham
